Biography

By 1985, when Douglas Magnus first heard that someone was selling Cerrillos turquoise from a mine site just south of town, he was already a well respected silversmith in Santa Fe. Since that year he has become a principal owner of 3 of the Cerrillos mines which were the first sites mined extensively in the early 1900's when turquoise first gained popularity in the western world. While he garners a steady dribble of small pieces, renowned for their deep green color and very occasionally an intense blue from the Tiffany mine that he uses in his jewelry, his foremost plan has been to preserve the sites from development and protect them as historical sites.

Since that time, Doug has more recently become known for his hugely popular line of spanish coin motif jewelry designed for Santa Fe's 400th Commemorative Year. Reminiscent of old ingots, spanish reale coins, and spanish crosses, the jewelry has become a symbol of Santa Fe and it's long history.

Douglas Magnus lives and works in his studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
